Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are typically made from glass reinforced plastic with copper traces used as conductors. Through-hole and surface mount components are fixed in place with solder. The copper traces link the components together forming a circuit.

How Harsh Environments
Affect Circuit Boards
Industrial circuit boards commonly operate in harsh environments. Operating cycles create temperature fluctuations where the board repeatedly heats and cools. Over time this stress on the circuit board could result in cracks or open connections. Exposure to airborne contaminants such as work piece debris or moisture can build on the circuit board and cause shorts between conductors, resulting in undesired operation or complete circuit board failure.
When a faulty circuit board is suspected, it is important to remember not only to troubleshoot the circuit board, but also the related components in the system that the circuit board controls. Verify the integrity of the incoming power and any components at the output of the circuit board that could compromise the reinstallation of a repaired, refurbished board. For example, if there is a short on the output of a circuit board that is not remediated prior to re-installation you could cause a repeat of the initial failure. Common Circuit Board Faults
Bad Connection or No Connection

Most circuit board failures can be attributed to two problems; something that should be conducting is not conducting or something that should not be conducting is conducting. These are referred to as opens and shorts.

Not Powering Up

When your circuit board will simply "not power up" you should first investigate the power source and verify it is within tolerance. Next look for obvious signs of damage to the board. Component failure may be at fault, but it is hard to determine without the proper diagnostic tools. Also, consider any external inputs required to initialize the board.

Physical Damage

Physical damage to a circuit board is an obvious sign of failure. Physical damage can include burnt components, trace damage, cracked board, corrosion, broken terminals, swollen or leaky capacitors, and excessive contamination. Any sign of physical damage on the board needs immediate attention.
